Organizing an Office Sports Group [The Why and How of "Professional" Sports]

Why Start an Office Sports Group?

Most people know of the benefits of playing sports on physical and mental health, but did you know that sports can also benefit a workplace? Starting an office sports group has been shown to improve employee moral, increase employee cohesion, and reduce stress. Whether you are an employer looking to increase productivity or an employee hoping to get healthier, sports will help you achieve these goals.

How do I Setup an Office Sports Group?

Organizing an office pick-up group can be difficult. Most organizers find themselves in a chicken or egg situation where they need people to play with in order to schedule a game, but they need a game scheduled in order to convince people to play with them.

Getting Started

We recommend you start by setting up a communication channel for everyone interested in playing, whether it’s through Facebook, WeChat, Slack, Javelin, or any other means of communication. This will help you gauge numbers and keep people in the loop as you organize these events.

Finding a Location

Most cities have a shortage of good sports facilities. Thus, we recommend looking for some nearby locations before selecting a day/sport. A good place to start is by contacting the recreation department of your city to try finding locations near your office. If you work near a university or large sports complex, you can also try contacting them to see if you can use their facilities. Finally, I recommend you visit local public parks to see what kind of space is available.

Setting a Day

People tend to be unwilling to offer days that work for them. To get the ball rolling, suggest a day/time and gauge response. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays tend to be the best days for most people.

Selecting a Sport

Our research has shown that most people don’t care too much about what sport they are playing. People typically play sports for the social and health benefits they bring. Thus, as long as something is being organized for people, they will come. Some sports that we recommend are Soccer, Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Disc Golf, or Badminton. You can either change things up week to week or select a sport everyone likes and stick to it.

Now you're all ready to go! Organize everything well in advance so that there are no surprises and send frequent reminders about your games to keep them fresh in peoples minds. They'll thank you for keeping them organized.
