What does the metaverse mean for the future of sports?

If you don’t follow the mainstream news in tech, you may not be aware of what is happening in the digital world. If you have stayed up to date with what’s happening, chances are you have heard terms like blockchain, cryptocurrency, or NFT. What if I told you there is something even bigger in the works?

Some of the biggest tech companies are working towards the ‘metaverse’. A digital world that will help people connect and bring immersive experiences to users. Now, what does this mean for the future of sports? To answer this question, we need to understand what the metaverse is. Let’s dive in.

What is the metaverse?

In short, the metaverse is an evolution of the internet that allows people to connect through 3-D virtual worlds using games and virtual reality. Companies like Meta, rebranded from Facebook, are building the forefront for a new civilization that we can’t quite see yet, taking the steps we need for an immersive connection.

If this sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, well, it kind of is. Think of it as a digital world where you can do and be whatever you want. Want to build an art gallery to host your NFT’s (Non-fungible tokens), or box with a robot in space? You can do it all. The possibilities are endless! The best part is that you don’t even have to leave your living room.

Now that we have a base understanding of what the metaverse is, let’s dive into how it will play a part in the future of sports and what companies are heavily investing in the future.

Big names are starting to play.

Adidas, the multinational sportswear manufacturer is going all-in on the crypto/metaverse world, teaming up with crypto exchange giant, Coinbase. What could this mean, and why is one of the biggest sports brands partnering with a crypto exchange? Well, we don’t have a lot of information on their deal as neither company has released information on the partnership.

This partnership came amidst Adidas teaming up with another company, The Sandbox. The Sandbox is a virtual world where players can play, own, and monetize their experiences within The Sandbox game, using the ETH blockchain.

It remains unknown as to whether or not Adidas will be releasing an NFT (Non-fungible token) line of their most popular styles. Essentially, Adidas clothing that people can wear virtually. Having the sportswear giants in the metaverse says a lot as to where sports may be heading in the future.

Even better viewing experiences.

The metaverse can definitely affect how we play sports with other people, but what if it can also change the way we watch sports?

We can currently watch live sports games from any screen we have at our disposal. The metaverse is changing the way we can watch sports by enhancing our viewing experience through immersive technology.

Instead of just watching your favorite team play through a screen, you can be at the actual game through virtual reality. You will be able to watch a game courtside without having to leave our living room; just throw on your VR headset and you’re in!

What the metaverse is creating for sports is a more interactive viewing experience. No more waiting in lines, and no more paying crazy prices for front-row seats. Just enter the metaverse and watch from where you feel comfortable.

The future of playing sports!

Now, where does this leave the physical act of playing sports? In a recent video released by Meta, we can see people playing a number of sports through the metaverse.

A lot of what we are able to do is still up in the air, but here are some things we can expect to see!

The metaverse will change the way people stay fit. You’ll be able to do things like enter a boxing ring for some quick sparring, or maybe you want to enter the ring against AI (artificial intelligence) to really hone your skills.

What if I just want to play sports with my friends, how does the metaverse affect team sports? Well, believe it or not, they are working on that as well. You’ll be able to play team sports like soccer from the comfort of your home. Get some friends together online and start playing soccer against an AI (artificial intelligence) team, or maybe you want a harder match-up? You'll be able to play a 5v5 soccer game between your friends and people across the world.

Connection is such a crucial part of sports, so enhancing that through virtual reality will be just as important as playing the sport.

Final thoughts.

As we see it, the way we conduct and play traditional sports today isn’t going anywhere. At least in the foreseeable future. The metaverse will be an additional resource for avid sports players to connect and play the sports they love.

There are many unresolved questions with the entrance of the metaverse, with much mystery as to where it will lead the future of sports. As the metaverse develops in the coming years, we can expect to see a new way to train and play.
