How To Stay Fit While Traveling

Fitness habits are hard to stick to while traveling. It's an extra layer to think about when you're planning your trip. You may ask yourself questions like, will I have the time? Is there going to be a gym nearby? What can I eat that fits with my diet? All these questions can make your trip even more tiring and troublesome to plan than it already is. But worry not, as we're here to help! Here are 5 tips to help you stay fit while traveling:

1. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is an easy way to limit the amount of calories you consume in day so that you don't overeat! It's a popular method of fasting even when people are not on vacation. Essentially, intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It focuses on when you can eat instead of what you can eat. The most common way of intermittent fasting is the 16/8 method, where one would fast for 16 hours and have an 8 hour window of eating. This typically means skipping breakfast in order to meet your eating window, but drinking zero calorie beverages like water, sugar-free soda, and black coffee are allowed during your fasting periods.

2. Walk, Walk, Walk!

Walking is a very underrated way of burning calories, not only on vacation, but in everyday life. In fact, according to Harvard Health Publishing, you can burn up to 189 calories in just 30 minutes of walking! That may not seem that much at first, but it quickly adds up over time. If your destination is close by, you can choose to walk there instead of taking the cab. Enjoy the outdoors and the scenery. Not only will you burn more calories that way, but you can save some cash too!

3. Workout Early in the Mornings

If you're staying at a hotel or resort that has a gym, or you plan on going to one nearby, it is ideal to workout early in the mornings. Not only will the gym be less crowded as most people would be asleep, but there will be less distractions as well. If you leave it for later on in the day, you will feel more tempted to skip your workout. You may feel tired, had too much to drink, or find some sort of excuse to not go. By going early in the morning, you can prevent all of this from happening.

4. Pack some Protein Powder

Finding low-calorie, high protein snacks while travelling is extremely difficult. Although it may sound like an odd tip, packing protein powder is a great way to supplement some protein into your day, without causing you to break the bank or the scale. By packing 1 scoop of protein powder for each day you're travelling, you can satiate yourself longer (as protein keeps you satiated longer) and not binge on any unhealthy snacks that you might regret the next day. Just be sure to pack a flavour like chocolate instead of vanilla, as suspicious white powders and airports don't go well together.

5. Balance is Everything

Just because you want to stay fit while you travel doesn't mean that you can't enjoy yourself! Your diet isn't going to be perfect and that's okay. Relaxing and enjoying the moment is the reason you went to travel in the first place! Remember to just do it in moderation. If you ate a heavier lunch, eat something lighter for dinner. Make smarter decisions instead of mindlessly gorging on everything in sight. That way, by the end of the trip, the only extra weight you'll be bringing home are the amazing souvenirs for you and your family & friends.
